Pallet Stretch Wrap for Stable, Protected Loads
Pallet stretch wrap is used to unitise cartons and products on a pallet by applying tensioned stretch film around the load. Paramount Packaging supplies hand-applied and machine-applied stretch films together with specialist wrapping products for warehousing, distribution and transport applications.How Stretch Wrap Works
Stretch film is designed to elongate as it is applied. As the stretched material attempts to recover, it creates containment force around the pallet load. Correct wrapping helps reduce unwanted carton movement while also providing a barrier against dust and incidental moisture during handling and storage. The performance of the load depends on far more than simply wrapping it several times. Film type, gauge, pre-stretch, wrapping pattern, pallet profile and load stability all matter.Hand Pallet Wrap
Hand stretch wrap is applied manually using the roll itself or a compatible dispenser.
It suits:
- lower-volume warehouses;
- irregular loads;
- mobile packing operations;
- backup wrapping; and
- businesses that do not justify a pallet wrapping machine.
Manual film is flexible and requires little equipment, but results can vary between operators.
Training staff to use an appropriate wrapping pattern and tension can improve consistency.
Machine Stretch Film
Machine stretch film is manufactured for compatible pallet wrapping equipment.
It is suited to operations processing enough pallets to justify automation.
A wrapping machine can provide more repeatable application, controlled film tension and greater consistency than entirely manual wrapping.
High-volume Australian pallet systems can include powered pre-stretch and adjustable tension, rotation and wrap-count settings, illustrating why film and machine compatibility should be evaluated together.
Blown Versus Cast Stretch Film
Paramount lists both blown and cast pallet film within its range.
These manufacturing methods create films with different characteristics.
Rather than assuming one is universally superior, consider puncture resistance, clarity, cling, noise during application, pre-stretch capability and the nature of the pallet.
Loads with projecting corners, sharp edges or highly irregular shapes may have different requirements from uniform cartons.
How Much Stretch Wrap Should You Use?
There is no universal number of rotations suitable for every pallet.
A lightweight uniform load requires a different containment strategy from a tall, unstable or heavy pallet.
Pay attention to:
- securing film to the pallet base;
- reinforcing the lower section;
- adequate overlap between film revolutions;
- corner stability;
- top containment where necessary; and
- consistent tension.
The goal is a stable transport unit, not simply a pallet covered in the largest possible quantity of plastic.
Stretch Wrap Is Not the Same as Shrink Wrap
These terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday packaging language, but technically they describe different processes.
Stretch wrap secures products through tension and elastic recovery. It does not require heat during normal application.
Shrink film is deliberately heated so the material contracts around the product.
Understanding this distinction is important when choosing equipment and film.
Clear or Black Pallet Wrap?
Clear film makes it easier to identify products, read labels and inspect the load without removing the wrap.
Black or opaque stretch film can provide additional visual concealment where the contents should not be readily identifiable.
The best choice depends on inventory handling, security requirements and scanning processes.
Reducing Stretch Film Consumption
Businesses looking to reduce film use should measure actual usage rather than focusing solely on roll price.
Machine settings, pre-stretch, load design, operator technique and film performance can all affect consumption.
A higher-performing film that uses less material per successfully contained pallet may provide better overall value than a cheaper film applied excessively.
Order Pallet Stretch Wrap
Paramount Packaging’s pallet stretch wrap range supports both manual and machine applications, helping businesses choose film based on load stability, throughput and operating conditions rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution.
